News: IEEE AESS 2020 Barry Carlton Award!

We are honored that our paper “Satellite Pose Estimation Challenge: Dataset, Competition Design, and Results” by Mate Kisantal, Sumant Sharma, Tae Ha "Jeff" Park, Dario Izzo, Marcus Märtens, and Simone D'Amico that appeared in the October 2020 issue of IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems, was selected as the 2020 Barry Carlton Award winner.

The Barry Carlton Award given in 2024 praises the most  impactful paper published in T-AES four years prior to the award conferral. The award was established in 1957 after the early death of M. Barry Carlton in an air accident the year before. It is one of the IEEE's oldest awards and supports a wonderful tradition of excellence.

As a part of the 2020 Award process, both externally and internally nominated papers are considered in terms of importance as an advancement in state of the art, AES technology of interest to AESS members, originality, quality, and scholarly character. Specific metrics for scientific relevance, number of citations, demonstrated ability to advance the state-of-the-art, and applicability were utilized to evaluate nominations. In addition to the TAES Editorial Board members, the Evaluation Committee involved world-renowned experts from industry and governmental organizations.

We are humbled by this recognition. The award itself speaks highly of how IEEE AESS cares about its authors and its legacy.
