News: Space Rendezvous Lab (SLAB) and European Space Agency (ESA) host AI competition for space navigation

By Simone D'Amico   Jan 31, 2019

Are you ready for self-flying satellites? Prove your mettle in a global challenge by training AI algorithms to determine the position and orientation of a drifting satellite through camera imagery. D'Amico's Space Rendezvous Lab (SLAB) and the European Space Agency (ESA) host an AI competition for space navigation by sharing the SLAB’s Spacecraft PosE Estimation Dataset (SPEED) benchmark with the community. SPEED incorporates images from both the Optical Stimulator (OS) camera emulator as well as the TRON facility at SLAB. Learn more at ESA. The challenge ends on July 1, 2019. Accurate position and orientation (pose) estimation of space debris is essential for ensuring humanity’s continued access to space. The challenge invites you to propose, train, and validate pose estimation algorithms for future on-orbit servicing and space depot development missions.

Simone D'Amico is the founder and director of SLAB
