News: Exoplanet Detection with Convolutional Neural Networks

By Simone D'Amico, August 3, 2023

For the first time, in this research, PhD student Zahra Ahmed shows the potential of Convolutional Neural Networks applied to the detection of exoplanets from a telescopic formation flying mission concept using star shades. An example of such a concept is the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO). The initial comparison with conventional techniques is very promising and paves the way for systematic exoplanet spectral characterization using new machine learning techniques.

Congratulations Zahra, and many thanks to JPL and specifically our collaborators Rehyu Hu and Mario Damiano for all the help!
